Best Fitness Hashtags for Instagram (Sorted by Niche)

The best fitness hashtags for Instagram are specific to your niche, such as #deadlift for strength, #trailrunning for runners and #mealprep for nutrition. Instagram's own help page says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, so pick a few that describe the post and your audience instead of pasting a long list.

Fitness hashtags for Instagram by niche: #deadlift for strength, #running, #mealprep for nutrition and #onlinecoach for coaching, with a limit of 5 tags per post
In short
  • Instagram's Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you have seen a higher number elsewhere, go by that page.
  • Pick tags that describe the post and the person you want to reach. Instagram says irrelevant hashtags can hurt your reach over time.
  • A simple split for 5 tags: one broad, two niche, one audience tag and one of your own. This is our suggestion, not an Instagram rule.
  • Check a tag's page before you use it. Some hashtags are not searchable when their content breaks the Community Standards.

Most hashtag lists are one long block of tags to copy and paste. That worked when Instagram allowed more tags per post, and it never helped you reach the right person. This guide sorts fitness hashtags by niche, shows how to spend the few tags Instagram allows now, and gives three starter sets for trainers and coaches. It quotes no reach or post counts for any single tag, because we did not read those on a source page and they change daily. Hashtags are one small part of personal trainer marketing, so treat them as a finishing touch.

What are the best fitness hashtags for Instagram?

The best ones describe what is in the post and who it is for. #fitness is broad and shared by a very large number of posts. #trailrunning or #mealprep is narrower, so the people browsing it care about that exact thing. Start from your niche, not from a list of the biggest tags.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Up to 5 tags on a post. That is what Instagram's own Use hashtags on Instagram help page says, and it adds that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, the comment will not post. We read it on 7 October 2026. If you have seen a higher number elsewhere, Instagram's help page now says 5.

The same page lists a few practical details. You can add hashtags in the caption or in a comment. Numbers work in a hashtag, but spaces and special characters like $ or % do not. You can only tag your own posts. And if your account is private, your tagged posts do not show on the public hashtag page.

The limit comes from Instagram. The 1-2-1-1 split is our suggestion.

How do you pick 5 hashtags for a post?

Give each tag one job. This split is our suggestion, not an Instagram rule, but it keeps a post from filling up with five near copies of the same tag:

  1. 1.One broad tag, such as #fitness. It tells Instagram the general topic.
  2. 2.Two niche tags that match the post, such as #strengthtraining and #mealprep.
  3. 3.One audience tag for the person you want to reach, such as #onlinecoach for other coaches or #beginnerworkout for new lifters.
  4. 4.One tag of your own, such as your name, your studio or your challenge. Over time it becomes a page where your posts sit together.

Rotate the niche and audience tags between posts so each one matches what you actually posted. A deadlift video and a meal prep post should not carry the same five tags.

Which hashtags work for strength training?

Pick the tag that matches the movement, the style of training or the audience, not just the gym.

  • Movement: #deadlift, #squat, #benchpress, #pullups
  • Style: #strengthtraining, #powerlifting, #hypertrophy, #bodybuilding
  • Audience: #beginnerworkout, #womenwholift, #strongwomen
  • Content type: #formcheck, #workoutoftheday, #gymmotivation

Which hashtags work for running and cardio?

Runners sort themselves by distance and terrain, so use both. A tag for a race distance and a tag for where you run will reach different people.

  • Distance: #5k, #10k, #halfmarathon, #marathontraining
  • Terrain: #trailrunning, #roadrunning, #treadmillworkout
  • Community: #running, #runningcommunity, #runningtips
  • Cross training: #cycling, #hiit, #cardioworkout

Which hashtags work for yoga, pilates and mobility?

This niche is built around routines people can follow along with, so tags that name the routine or the goal tend to fit best.

  • Practice: #yoga, #pilates, #reformerpilates, #yogaflow
  • Goal: #mobility, #flexibility, #stretching, #backpain
  • Routine: #morningroutine, #warmup, #cooldown, #recovery

Which hashtags work for nutrition and meal prep?

Food posts are searched by what is on the plate, so name the dish, the diet style or the macro goal. If you share recipes with macros, tag the macro focus too. The macro calculator is a quick free way to work out a client's targets before you post a recipe built around them.

  • Prep and planning: #mealprep, #mealplan, #grocerylist, #batchcooking
  • Macros: #macros, #highprotein, #proteinrecipes, #caloriedeficit
  • Style: #healthyrecipes, #plantbasedrecipes, #easydinner
  • Professional: #nutritioncoach, #nutritionist, #dietitian

Which hashtags should personal trainers and online coaches use?

A client who finds you needs three things from your post: what you do, who you do it for and where to go next. Trainer tags should say the first two. Local trainers get more from a tag for their own city than from a national one, because the person searching can actually train with you.

Three starter sets of 5 tags. Replace #yourcitygym with your own city.
  • Online coaches: #onlinecoach, #onlinetraining, #fitnesscoach, #coachlife
  • Local trainers: #personaltrainer, #ptlife, plus a tag for your city or your gym, such as #yourcitygym
  • Nutrition coaches: #nutritioncoach, #mealprep, #macros, #healthyeating
  • Studios and small groups: #smallgrouptraining, #fitnessstudio, #groupfitness

If you run a challenge, give it its own tag and put it on every post and every client story about it. Our list of fitness challenge ideas covers formats that are easy to run and easy to tag.

Give new followers somewhere to go

A hashtag gets someone to your profile. A landing page with your offer, packages and a booking button gets them to say yes. Build one in Scraler and link it in your bio.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the comments?

Instagram's help page says you can add hashtags in the caption or in a comment, so both are allowed. Put them in the caption if you want the post to read as finished the moment it goes live. Use a comment if you prefer a clean caption, and keep the comment short.

If you forget a tag, you do not need to repost. The same page says you can edit the caption of a post you already shared, or add the hashtag in a comment. Instagram counts the limit per photo or video: if you go past 5 tags on one post, the comment will not post.

Write each tag as one word with no spaces. Use #mealprep, not #meal prep, because a space ends the tag. Many creators capitalise each word (#MealPrep) to make tags easier to read.

How do you check a hashtag before you use it?

Tap the tag and look at what comes up before you commit it to your posts. Instagram says a hashtag may not be searchable if its text or the content under it consistently does not follow its Terms of Use or Community Standards, and that it reviews these periodically. A tag that looks fine can still be filled with posts you do not want to sit beside.

  • Look at the recent posts. If they are off topic, spam or unrelated to training, skip the tag.
  • Check it is searchable. If it does not come up in search, drop it.
  • Check it matches your post. If you would not describe the post with that word, do not use it.
  • Keep your account public. Instagram says tagged posts from private accounts do not appear on public hashtag pages.

Instagram also says the order of posts in hashtag search results can depend on when a post was shared, how others engage with it and whether it meets its Recommendation Guidelines. A tag helps people find you. The post still has to be worth stopping for.

How do you find out which hashtags bring clients?

Keep it simple. After a month, look at the posts that led to a follow, a message or an enquiry and see which tags they carried. Keep those, and replace the ones that never show up in anything that worked.

  1. 1.Keep a short list per niche. Ten to fifteen tags you have checked is plenty to rotate through.
  2. 2.Note enquiries. When a new client says where they found you, write down the post.
  3. 3.Review monthly. Drop tags that show nothing and test one or two new ones.
  4. 4.Do not chase the biggest tag. A tag that matches your post and your audience beats a big one that does not.

Hashtags are one small part of getting clients. A clear profile and a simple page for your offer matter more once someone lands on you. Our guide to building a personal trainer website covers what to put on it, and how to start a personal training business covers the rest of the setup. If you coach online, how to become an online personal trainer goes through the steps from first client to a full roster.

Frequently asked questions

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Up to 5 tags on a post, according to Instagram's Help Center page "Use hashtags on Instagram", which we read on 7 October 2026. The page says that if you include more than 5, the comment will not post. If you have seen a higher number elsewhere, the help page now says 5.
What are the best fitness hashtags for Instagram?
The ones that describe your post and your audience, such as #strengthtraining, #running, #mealprep or #onlinecoach. Broad tags like #fitness are fine as one of your five. Narrow tags reach people who care about that exact topic.
Should I put hashtags in the caption or the comments?
Either works. Instagram's help page says you can add hashtags in the caption or in a comment, and that you can edit the caption or add a comment to tag a post you have already shared.
Why can I not find a hashtag on Instagram?
Instagram says a hashtag may not be searchable if its text or the content under it consistently does not follow the Terms of Use or Community Standards. It reviews these hashtags periodically and may make one searchable again if the content changes.
Do hashtags work on a private account?
Not for discovery. Instagram says that when a private account adds a hashtag, the post does not appear on the public hashtag page. If you want new people to find your posts, use a public profile.
Should I copy a long list of hashtags for every post?
No. With a limit of 5 you could not paste a long list anyway, and Instagram says irrelevant hashtags can hurt your reach over time. Pick tags that match the post, and rotate them.
