What stride length means, and why it matters
Stride length is the distance your body covers with a single step, heel strike to heel strike. It is the one number every step counter, phone pedometer and fitness watch needs before it can turn a raw step count into a distance or a calorie estimate. Get it wrong and every derived number, kilometres walked, miles logged, calories burned, is wrong by the same margin.
It is also different for everyone. Two people can take the same number of steps on the same walk and cover noticeably different ground, because stride length scales with leg length, height, walking speed and, to a smaller degree, age and walking style. A fixed, generic assumption built into most apps (often somewhere around 0.76 m) will overestimate a short person's distance and underestimate a tall person's.
This calculator gives you two ways to get a personal number: estimate it from your height and sex using a published regression formula, or measure it directly by walking a known distance and counting your steps. Either result then feeds the steps to km, steps to miles and steps to calories calculators, or your phone's own stride length setting.
Step length versus stride length
Strictly speaking, a stride is a full gait cycle: left foot forward, right foot forward, left foot forward again, back to where you started on that side. A step is half of that, one footfall to the next. Confusingly, most consumer tools, including this one and the pedometer research it is built on, use "stride length" to mean the per-step distance, because that is the figure you multiply by a step count to get distance. If you come across a source using the stricter, full gait cycle definition, its number will read roughly double this one for the same person.
How this calculator works
Both methods below produce the same kind of answer, a single figure in centimetres or inches representing how far one of your steps covers. Which one you use depends on how much accuracy you need and whether you are able to go and measure yourself.
From height
Multiply your height by a fixed factor: 0.413 for women, 0.415 for men, using the same unit for both sides so the result comes out in that unit. A 168 cm woman gets 168 × 0.413 = 69.4 cm. A 178 cm man gets 178 × 0.415 = 73.9 cm. The factor comes from a regression built on measured walking step counts across a wide range of adult heights, explained in the next section.
From a direct measurement
Walk a measured distance and count every step you take across it, then divide distance by steps. Twenty metres covered in 27 steps gives 2,000 cm ÷ 27 = 74.1 cm per step. This sidesteps the population average entirely and reflects your actual walking pattern, including anything the height formula cannot see, such as leg length relative to torso, hip mobility or an individual walking style.
Whichever method you use, the calculator also shows how many of your steps it takes to cover a kilometre or a mile at that stride, and how far 10,000 steps, the most common daily step target, would carry you.

Why a height based formula, and when to measure instead
The 0.413 and 0.415 factors are the height based step length ratios widely attributed to Hoeger et al. (2008), published in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal, who measured one-mile step counts across walking and running speeds and showed step count varies with height, sex and pace. Under this formula, walking step length works out to 41.3 percent of height for women and 41.5 percent for men, which is exactly where this calculator's default multipliers come from, and it is the same formula built into most commercial pedometers and fitness trackers.
It is a population average, not a measurement of you specifically. Öberg et al. (1993), who catalogued detailed gait parameters across 233 healthy people aged 10 to 79, found significant sex and age differences in step length alongside real individual spread around the height based average, spread that widens toward the older end of the range as walking speed and step length naturally decline. Two people of identical height can have a genuinely different stride because of leg length, hip mobility or the pace they habitually walk at.
Use the height based estimate when you want a reasonable number quickly, for example to set up a new phone pedometer or get a first pass at a walking distance goal. Use the measured method when accuracy matters more, such as calibrating a fitness tracker you plan to rely on every day, or when your build is unusual relative to your height, notably long or short legs, or a walking gait changed by injury, age or rehabilitation.
Where this formula runs into trouble
The height based formula was built from adult walking data, so it is a poor fit outside the population it was measured on. Children under about 10 have a different height to leg length ratio than adults and tend to take proportionally shorter steps, so the same multiplier overstates their stride. Pregnancy, especially in the later stages, commonly shortens and widens stride as balance and hip mechanics change, in ways a height based estimate cannot see.
Anyone using a mobility aid, recovering from a lower limb injury, or walking with a prosthetic will typically have a stride quite different from the height based prediction, sometimes by a large margin rather than a small one. In every one of these situations, a direct measurement, walking your own measured distance and counting your own steps, is worth doing instead of trusting the formula, because it captures your actual gait rather than a population average that was never built to describe it. Fatigue late in a long walk, a loaded backpack, and slick or uneven footing all shorten real stride a little further still, none of which a height based number can see.
Walking stride versus running and sport specific strides
Everything on this page describes a normal walking stride, heel strike to heel strike at a comfortable, everyday pace. It is not the same number you would use for running, hiking with a loaded pack, or field sports, and using it for those would understate the real distance covered.
Running stride is typically 1.5 to 2 times longer than the same person's walking stride, because part of each running stride is spent airborne with both feet off the ground, covering more distance per footfall than a walking step can. Hiking with a pack, walking on sand, or moving through deep snow all tend to shorten stride below the normal walking figure, sometimes noticeably, because unstable or resistant footing limits how far you can safely push off with each step. If you train or coach across more than one of these contexts, treat this calculator's output as specific to level ground walking rather than a single number for every activity.
A treadmill belt is also worth separating from overground walking, even though both are "walking" in the everyday sense. The belt sets your pace externally rather than letting your own gait drift naturally faster or slower over the course of a walk, which tends to make treadmill stride marginally more consistent step to step, though not necessarily identical to your stride on a track or pavement at the same nominal speed. If you plan to use a measured stride for outdoor distance tracking, measure it outdoors rather than on a treadmill, and treat a treadmill measured stride as most reliable for treadmill sessions specifically.

Under this formula, stride length rises in a straight line with height, since both the women's and men's multipliers are fixed constants. How to measure your stride directly
You need a flat, measured distance and a way to count steps. It takes five minutes and is the single best upgrade you can make over the height based estimate.
Pick a distance
A running track is ideal, since the lane markings are exact, but any measured path of at least 20 metres works, a football pitch, a long hallway with known dimensions, or a stretch of pavement you have measured with a tape or a mapping app. Longer is better: small errors in exactly where you started or stopped, or one uneven step, matter far less spread across 50 metres than over 5.
Walk it naturally
Walk at your normal, comfortable pace, the one you would use on an everyday walk to the shops or around the block. Counting while consciously trying to keep an even, careful rhythm changes your stride from what it actually is, so try to walk as you normally would and either count under your breath or use a phone step counter alongside for the same stretch.
Do the division
Distance in centimetres divided by steps taken gives your stride length in centimetres. Repeat the walk two or three times and average the results if the numbers vary by more than a centimetre or two between attempts, which is normal and just reflects everyday variation in how you walk.
A phone voice memo or a simple tally on your fingers works fine for counting; you do not need special equipment. If you have access to a phone step counter you trust for short distances, walking with it running alongside your own manual count is a useful cross-check, though for the walk itself your own count of footfalls is the one to trust, since phone counters can miss or double count individual steps over a short distance.
What to do with your stride length

Common mistakes
Measuring over too short a distance. Ten steps barely averages out a single stumble, a longer first step out of standing still, or an uneven paving stone. Use at least 20 metres, and 50 metres or more if you can.
Walking unnaturally while counting. Deliberately taking careful, even steps to make counting easier shortens or lengthens your stride from what it actually is on a normal walk, which defeats the point of measuring in the first place.
Using someone else's stride. Even at the same height, stride length varies enough between people that borrowing a friend's number, or a generic "average adult" figure from an app, introduces more error than either method on this page.
Confusing stride length with step targets. A shorter stride needs more steps to cover the same distance. If two people both walk 10,000 steps in a day, the taller one, or the one with the longer stride, has usually gone noticeably further.
Assuming one stride length covers every surface. A stride measured on a flat track will not hold on sand, stairs, snow or a steep hill, all of which naturally shorten your step. Treat a single stride length as most accurate for the level, even ground it was measured on.
