How swimming calories are calculated

Swimming's energy cost swings with effort more than almost any other activity in the compendium, because water resistance means a small change in pace or stroke technique changes the workload a lot. The calculator assigns each effort level a MET value, then converts it into calories using your weight and time.

The formula is calories burned equals MET times 3.5, times your weight in kilograms, divided by 200, times the number of minutes. Slow to moderate lap swimming carries a MET of 5.8. Push into vigorous lap swimming and the MET rises to 9.8, close to double.

Worked example

A 70 kg swimmer doing slow to moderate laps, MET 5.8, for 30 minutes burns 5.8 times 3.5 times 70, divided by 200, times 30, which comes to 213 kcal. The same 30 minutes at a vigorous pace instead, MET 9.8, rises to about 360 kcal.

Pool length does not change the formula

Pool length does not enter the formula directly, since MET values are calibrated to pace and effort rather than distance, but it does change how honestly you judge that effort. A 25 metre pool means more turns and a brief push off the wall per lap than a 50 metre pool, and for many swimmers that makes the same perceived effort feel slightly easier to sustain over a full session, since each wall push offers a small moment of rest a longer pool does not.

Does stroke choice change the number

The effort bands in this calculator assume front crawl, the stroke most lap swimmers default to and the one the compendium's swimming entries are built around. Other strokes are not free, though. The ordering most swim coaches and exercise scientists agree on runs roughly butterfly at the top, backstroke and breaststroke in the middle, and an easy freestyle at the bottom, mainly because of how much muscle mass and drag each stroke fights against.
