How to Create a Fitness App: What It Costs to Build (Custom vs White-Label)
You create a fitness app either by building it custom or by publishing a branded app on a coaching platform. On fitness app development cost, agencies estimate a custom build from $25,000 for an MVP to $160,000 or more for a full app. A branded app on a platform like Scraler starts from $109 a month plus Apple's $99 a year.

- Agency estimates for a custom fitness app run from $25,000 (MVP) and $40,000 to $80,000 (basic) up to $60,000 to $160,000 for a full-featured app. Complex apps with AI or wearables go higher.
- After launch, one agency suggests budgeting 15% to 20% of the build cost every year for maintenance.
- Store fees are small: Apple charges $99 a year and Google Play a one-time $25.
- In a worked example, year one costs about $60,124 for a custom build at the low end of the full-featured range ($60,000) and about $1,407 for a branded app on Scraler Ultimate.
- Custom only makes sense if the app is the product. If you are a coach delivering training and nutrition, a branded app on a platform does the job.
Most coaches asking this are not trying to launch the next Strava. They want clients to download an app with their name and logo, log workouts, see meal plans and message them. That is a different project from a consumer fitness app, and it has a very different price. This guide puts numbers on both. Every market figure comes from a page we read on 7 October 2026, and anything we calculated is labelled as a worked example. If you are still choosing the platform underneath, our guide to personal trainer software compares the options, and best coaching apps lists what each one costs.
How much does it cost to build a fitness app?
The agency estimates we read start at $25,000 and run well past $100,000. Note who is publishing them: software agencies selling development. Treat the numbers as a market signal, not a quote.
Topflight says a full-featured fitness product typically lands between $60,000 and $160,000, and that a fitness MVP can start at $25,000. Appinventiv gives a wider ladder, from $40,000 to $400,000, depending on complexity.

The two agencies do not agree on where one tier ends and the next begins, which is itself useful. A "full-featured" app at one agency overlaps the "basic" and "mid-level" tiers at the other. Expect quotes to vary a lot for the same brief.
What drives fitness app development cost for a custom build?
- Features. Topflight says the full-featured range depends on whether you need AI or machine learning (for example movement recognition), Bluetooth and hardware connectivity, voice or video streaming. Appinventiv puts video content, payments and third-party integrations in its mid-level tier.
- Business model. Appinventiv estimates consumer subscription apps at $40,000 to $120,000, trainer marketplace apps (booking, chat, payments, dashboards) at $80,000 to $200,000 and wearable apps at $100,000 to $300,000.
- Who builds it. Appinventiv lists hourly rates of $200 to $350 in the USA and Canada, $150 to $250 in Europe and $50 to $100 in India and Asia. Cheaper hourly rates can cost you in coordination.
- Two platforms. An app that runs on both iPhone and Android has to be built and tested for both.
Notice what a coaching app needs: workout logging, nutrition, chat, check-ins, payments, push notifications, an admin side for you. That list lands in the mid-level to marketplace tiers above. You would be building a coaching platform, not just an app.
What does a fitness app cost after launch?
The build is the first bill, not the last. Three costs recur:
- Apple Developer Program: $99 a year. Apple lists a $99 annual membership on its program page.
- Google Play: $25 once. Google charges a one-time US$25 registration fee. Personal accounts created after 13 November 2023 also have to meet testing requirements before the app can go live.
- Maintenance. Topflight says many teams budget about 15% to 20% of the initial build cost per year for bug fixes, OS updates, dependency upgrades and security patches. On a $60,000 build that is $9,000 to $12,000 a year, a worked example from that rule of thumb.
The worked example above uses the low end of Topflight's full-featured range ($60,000), the two store fees, and 12 months of Scraler Ultimate at $109 ($1,308) plus Apple's $99. That is $60,124 against $1,407, roughly 43 to 1. Scraler publishes the Android app under its own Google Play account, so that line is $0 for a coach. If you pay yearly on Scraler the plan drops to $981. The custom total leaves out maintenance, design changes and anything you add later, so it is a floor, not an estimate.
How long does it take to create a fitness app?
Appinventiv's timeline table puts the build phase at 0 to 6 months, with revenue only starting to come in after that. Real projects slip, so plan for the top of the range.
The store review is the short part. Apple says its App Review typically reviews at least 50% of submissions in under 24 hours and 90% in under 48 hours. A rejection for missing metadata or a broken link restarts the clock, and setting up the developer accounts takes time before you ever submit.
On a platform, you skip the build. Scraler's custom app page says to allow about a week for building and store review once your paid Ultimate subscription and required setup are ready. Apple account approval is separate, and store reviews can take longer.
How do I create a fitness app without coding?
Publish a white-label app on a coaching platform. The platform has already built the workout logging, nutrition, chat and payments. It builds a version under your name and icon, and you submit it under your own Apple Developer account. We compared eight vendors, who owns which developer account and what each charges in the white-label fitness app guide, so we will not repeat it here.
On Scraler, the branded app is part of the Ultimate plan, which starts at $109 a month for up to 100 active clients. You hold the Apple Developer account ($99 a year) and Scraler publishes the Android app under its own Google Play account. The app comes with the same tools your clients already use: workout programs with exercise videos, meal plans, check-ins and chat.
Design your app, set your name and icon, and let Scraler handle the build and store submission on Ultimate. Plans start from $109 a month.
See the custom appShould I build a custom fitness app or use white-label?
It depends on what the app is. If the app is the product, with a new kind of tracking, a consumer subscription or hardware, build custom and budget for agency rates. If you are a coach, studio or gym delivering training and nutrition to your own clients, the product is you, and the app is the container.
- Full control of features and design
- Makes sense when the app itself is the product
- $25,000 to $160,000 or more to build, per the agencies we read
- Up to 6 months of build phase, then maintenance
- You own and manage the code, servers and updates
- Your name, icon and store listing
- Fits coaches, studios and gyms
- From $109 a month on Scraler Ultimate, plus Apple $99 a year
- About a week to build and submit
- Updates and new features come with the platform
The trade-off is control. On a platform you work with the features it offers and its roadmap. Check what happens to your listing if you ever leave, which most vendors do not publish. The white-label guide lists the questions to ask before you sign.
What are the steps to launch your own fitness app?
- 1Define what clients do in it
Log workouts, see meals, message you, pay you. Write the list.
- 2Choose the route
Custom for a new product, a platform for delivering your coaching.
- 3Open the developer accounts
Apple $99 a year, Google Play $25 once. Start early, approval takes time.
- 4Design and build
Name, icon, colours and tabs. On a platform, this is a setup, not a project.
- 5Submit and launch
Apple reviews most apps within 48 hours. Then invite clients.
If you are still deciding whether you need an app at all, best apps for personal trainers and online coaching platforms compare the options with and without a branded app.
