What DOTS is and how it is calculated

A DOTS score turns a raw total, or a single lift, into a number you can compare across body weights and between men and women. A 60kg lifter's 400kg total means something very different from a 140kg lifter's 400kg total, so before you can say who is stronger relative to their size, you need every body weight on the same scale. DOTS does that with a formula rather than a lookup table. DOTS stands for Dynamic Objective Teamscoring System, the name Konertz gave it when the German federation adopted it for team scoring.

The formula, spelled out

DOTS score = total × 500 ÷ (A + B×bw + C×bw² + D×bw³ + E×bw⁴), where bw is body weight in kilograms and A to E are five fixed coefficients, different for men and women. In words: run your body weight through a five-term polynomial to get a single value, divide 500 by that value to get your personal multiplier, then multiply your total (or lift) by the multiplier. Because the curve bends rather than runs straight, the multiplier shrinks faster at some body weights than others, which is the whole point: raw strength does not scale in a straight line with body weight.

A worked example

Take an 83kg man with a 600kg total, squat, bench and deadlift added together. His polynomial value works out to roughly 740.6, so his multiplier is 500 divided by 740.6, about 0.6751. Multiply that by his 600kg total and he scores roughly 405 DOTS, solidly in the advanced band. Change only the body weight, keep the total the same, and the score moves, which is exactly what the formula is for.

The Tim Konertz coefficients this calculator uses

The five coefficients behind DOTS were published by Tim Konertz in 2019, fitted separately for men and women against a large set of competition results. Every DOTS calculator, including this one, runs these exact numbers.

Men

A = −307.75076, B = 24.0900756, C = −0.1918759221, D = 0.0007391293, E = −0.000001093. Validated for body weights from 40 to 210kg.

Women

A = −57.96288, B = 13.6175032, C = −0.1126655495, D = 0.0005158568, E = −0.0000010706. Validated for body weights from 40 to 150kg.

Outside those ranges DOTS does not extrapolate the curve further, it caps the coefficient at the boundary. A men's lifter under 40kg or over 210kg, or a women's lifter outside 40 to 150kg, is scored using the nearest boundary's coefficient rather than a value fitted to their actual body weight. Konertz fitted and published the coefficients only for those ranges, so this calculator, like most DOTS implementations, clamps to the boundary rather than extrapolating a curve that was never fitted there, not a shortcoming specific to this calculator, but a score anchored at the boundary is still a weaker read on a lifter's strength than one calculated inside the validated range.

Why DOTS, and how it compares with Wilks and IPF GL

Body-weight-adjustment formulas have been part of powerlifting for decades, and the sport has cycled through several: Schwartz-Malone, then Wilks, and now DOTS alongside the IPF's own GL points. All of them share the same basic idea, a polynomial fitted to body weight, but they differ in whose data they were fitted to and when.

Wilks (mid-1990s, revised 2020)

Robert Wilks published his formula in the mid-1990s. A 1999 validation study found it held up well for bench press and total, but carried a bias against heavier lifters in the deadlift and towards intermediate weight classes in the women's squat, signs its curve does not fit every body weight equally well. A revised Wilks 2020 exists, but most federations that updated their formula moved to DOTS or GL points instead of the revision.

IPF GL points

The International Powerlifting Federation's own formula, GL points, does not share DOTS' polynomial shape at all. It runs body weight through an exponential model, GL = total x 100 / (A minus B times e to the minus C times body weight), with its own fitted constants for men and women, landing on a roughly 0 to 100 scale rather than DOTS' roughly 0 to 600 scale. The two formulas rank lifters in almost the same order, but a GL score and a DOTS score are never comparable numbers: the same 83kg, 600kg lifter from the worked example above scores roughly 405 DOTS and roughly 83 GL points, a gap driven entirely by scale, not by disagreement over who lifted better.

For an official Best Lifter award, use whichever formula that specific federation runs, since that is the number that decides the trophy. For tracking your own progress, or comparing yourself with a training partner, DOTS is the modern, widely published default many federations outside the IPF choose to run, precisely because it does not require a federation's own meet software.

A short history

Before Wilks, powerlifting used the Schwartz formula for men, later paired with the Malone formula for women once enough female competition data existed to fit a separate curve. Both were built from far smaller samples than modern federations produce in a single national meet, and both were eventually shown to undervalue lifters away from the middle of the weight range they were fitted on. Wilks replaced Schwartz-Malone in the 1990s for the same reason DOTS later replaced Wilks: more lifters at more body weights meant a better-fitted curve was possible, and each generation of formula corrected the drift the previous one had accumulated at the edges of the weight range. The pattern is consistent across fifty years of the sport, a formula holds up well for a decade or two of use, more data accumulates at the extremes, and someone eventually re-fits the curve.

How much DOTS and GL actually differ

For an open-class, untested lifter, DOTS and IPF GL points rank lifters in almost the same order, but the two numbers are never close. DOTS is a fourth-degree, five-term polynomial of body weight, producing scores on a roughly 0 to 600 scale. GL points is an exponential model on a roughly 0 to 100 scale. An 83kg lifter with a 600kg total scores roughly 405 DOTS against roughly 83 GL points for the identical lift, a gap of scale rather than substance, so treat the two as separate rankings that happen to agree on order, not as interchangeable point totals. Where they diverge beyond the maths is administrative: GL points is calculated by the IPF's own meet software as that federation's official scoring formula, while DOTS is published as a standalone formula any lifter, coach or app can run independently of any federation's software. Age is handled separately from both formulas. The IPF awards its Sub-Junior, Junior, Open and Master medals on the raw total within each division rather than on an age-adjusted score, and neither the DOTS nor the GL formula itself contains an age term. Some federations layer an optional age coefficient, such as a Foster coefficient for cadet and junior lifters or a McCulloch coefficient for masters, on top of a lifter's finished score for informal cross-age comparison, but that is an addition on top of the formula, not part of GL points or DOTS itself.

How to use your DOTS score

A single DOTS number is a snapshot. It gets useful once you compare it against something, either your own history or another lifter.

Track it over time

Recalculate every time you hit a new total or your body weight shifts meaningfully. A rising DOTS score confirms you are getting stronger relative to your size, not just heavier and lifting proportionally more. A flat or falling score while your total climbs usually means the weight is going up because your body weight is going up, not because you are getting stronger.

Compare across weight classes

DOTS is what lets a 59kg lifter and a 120kg lifter argue sensibly about who had the better day. Use it to rank a whole training group or an entire meet result sheet on one scale, instead of only comparing lifters in the same weight class.

Set a weight-class-independent goal

Instead of chasing a round total number that only makes sense at your current body weight, pick a DOTS target, 350, 400, 450, and nudge the total field until your score hits it. Whatever total gets you there is the number to chase at your current body weight, and you can re-check it any time your weight shifts through a bulk or a cut.

Judge a cut or a bulk honestly

DOTS is also a useful check on whether a weight change actually helped. If you cut and your total dropped by less than the formula predicts a lighter body should cost you, the cut was a net win for your DOTS score even though the bar total went down. The same logic works in reverse for a bulk: a bigger total only counts as real progress if it outpaces what extra body weight alone would be expected to add.

A worked cut versus bulk comparison

Take the 83kg, 600kg lifter from the earlier worked example, sitting at roughly 405 DOTS. Cut to 78kg while the total slips to 580kg, giving up 20kg on the bar, and the score comes out to about 406 DOTS, a small increase despite lifting less weight, because the multiplier at 78kg grew faster than the total shrank. Now run the same lifter the other way: bulk from 83kg to 93kg and the total climbs to 630kg, a real 30kg gain on the bar, and the score drops to about 401 DOTS, slightly below where it started, because a 12% heavier body weight needed more than a 5% bigger total to keep pace. Neither outcome is visible from the bar total alone, the DOTS number is what tells you the cut was worth it and the bulk was not, yet.

Using DOTS for a single lift instead of a total

The arithmetic does not care what number you feed it, so you can put your best squat, bench or deadlift in instead of a full total. This is not the official use of the formula, DOTS was built and validated against full powerlifting totals (squat plus bench plus deadlift), so a single-lift DOTS score has no competition standing and is not comparable to the total-based bands above.

It is still a reasonable, consistent way to compare your own squat, bench or deadlift against your own body weight over time, or to compare a single lift with a training partner at a different body weight. Just keep the comparison to other single-lift DOTS scores, and do not read a squat-only score against the total table.

A worked single-lift example

Take a 63kg woman with a 140kg squat and no bench or deadlift logged yet. Her women's polynomial value at 63kg works out to roughly 464.9, so her multiplier is 500 divided by 464.9, about 1.0755. Multiply that by her 140kg squat and she scores roughly 151 DOTS. Six months later her squat is up to 150kg at the same 63kg body weight, and running the same multiplier through the formula puts her at roughly 161 DOTS, a clean read on how much her squat specifically improved with body weight held constant. A raw kilogram number cannot show that on its own once body weight moves even slightly between the two sessions, which is common for anyone training through a normal eating and training cycle.

Common mistakes

Comparing a single-lift score against the total table. A 400 DOTS bench is not the same achievement as a 400 DOTS total. Keep the two separate.

Reading a clamped score as a real one. Below 40kg, or above 210kg for men and 150kg for women, the score is calculated at the boundary coefficient, not at your actual body weight.

Mixing formulas mid-comparison. A Wilks score and a DOTS score from the same lift are not interchangeable numbers, even though they measure the same idea.

Forgetting the total needs all three lifts. Squat plus bench plus deadlift, each your best successful attempt, not your best of each across different sessions.

Reading too much into a single data point. One meet's DOTS score is a snapshot. A trend across several meets or training blocks tells you far more than any one number.

How coaches use a DOTS calculator

For a strength coach, DOTS is a fast way to put every client on one scale regardless of who is heaviest in the room. It turns "client A added 20kg to their total" into a number that is directly comparable with "client B, who is 30kg lighter, added 15kg", which is otherwise an awkward comparison to make on gut feeling alone.

A practical routine is to log body weight and working totals at the end of each training block, recalculate DOTS, and review the trend rather than the total in isolation. It also gives a body-weight-independent way to set goals for clients cutting or bulking through a competitive season, since the target moves with them instead of staying fixed to a number that made sense at a different body weight.

What a DOTS trend looks like across a training block

The useful pattern is three or four checkpoints spaced across a block rather than one score in isolation. A client who logs 320 DOTS at the start of a twelve-week block, 328 at week six and 341 at the final session is trending up regardless of whether body weight moved in that window, because each score already adjusts for whatever they weighed that day. A flat line across the same three checkpoints, even while the bar total keeps climbing, usually means body weight is rising at close to the same rate as strength, which is worth flagging to a client who assumes every heavier total is unambiguous progress.

For a client entering their first meet, DOTS is also a gentler way to frame expectations than a raw total. A lighter male lifter can see that a 355kg total at 60kg body weight already sits around 300 DOTS, on par with a much bigger total from a heavier training partner, instead of feeling behind on the whiteboard just because the numbers on the bar are smaller.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good DOTS score?
Above 400 puts you in the advanced range for a raw, tested lifter, and above 450 is elite by most federations' informal standards. A first competition total in the 250 to 300 DOTS range is completely normal. Context matters more than the raw number: a 300 DOTS score after six months of training is faster progress than a 400 DOTS score after ten years.
How is DOTS calculated?
Take your body weight in kilograms, run it through a five-term polynomial with coefficients fitted separately for men and women, then divide 500 by the result to get your personal multiplier. Is DOTS the same formula for men and women?

Does DOTS use my competition weigh-in or my everyday weight?
For an official score, use the body weight recorded at the meet's weigh-in, since that is the number the federation uses. For tracking your own progress between meets, use your training body weight on the day you hit a new total so your comparisons stay consistent.
Why did USA Powerlifting move away from Wilks?
Wilks' mid-1990s dataset came from an era with different testing standards and far fewer lifters at the weight extremes, and a 1999 validation study documented bias in its curve at those extremes. USA Powerlifting competed under the IPF's own points formula while it was still an IPF affiliate, then the IPF expelled USA Powerlifting in November 2021, ending that arrangement.
How accurate is DOTS outside the validated body weight range?
The Konertz coefficients were fitted and published only for 40 to 210kg in men and 40 to 150kg in women. Below or above that range, this calculator, like most DOTS implementations, caps the coefficient at the boundary value rather than extrapolating a curve that was never fitted there, so the score reflects the 40kg or 210kg (150kg for women) coefficient, not the lifter's actual body weight. That is a deliberate convention, not a bug, but a score anchored at the boundary is a rougher estimate than one calculated inside the validated range.
Does age affect a DOTS score?
No, the DOTS formula itself only takes body weight and lifted weight as inputs. Federations that want an age adjustment multiply the finished score by a separate age coefficient layered on top, such as a Foster coefficient for cadet and junior lifters or a McCulloch coefficient for masters, rather than changing the DOTS formula itself.
What counts as the total for a DOTS score?
In competition powerlifting, the total is your best successful squat plus your best successful bench press plus your best successful deadlift, each from three attempts. If you train without all three lifts, you can still run a partial total or a single lift through the formula, but treat the result as an estimate rather than a meet-ready score.
Can DOTS compare a powerlifter with a weightlifter or strongman competitor?
No. DOTS was fitted purely on powerlifting squat, bench and deadlift data, so it has no validity for Olympic weightlifting totals, strongman events or any other strength sport. Each sport that needs to compare across body weights uses its own formula, such as the Sinclair coefficient for weightlifting.
