How the plate loading calculator works
You give it three things: the total weight you want on the bar, the weight of the bar itself, and the plates you actually have access to. It works out how much weight needs to sit on each side, then fills that side from the heaviest plate down until it runs out of weight to add or runs out of plates. Untick anything your gym does not stock and the calculator refills the stack using only what is left.
The output is a list of plates for one side only, since the other side is loaded the same way, plus the total you end up with if your available plates cannot hit the target exactly. This matters most in a gym you do not train in regularly, a hotel gym, a friend's garage or a new box, where the plate selection is a guess until you look.
Step 1: weight to load
Subtract the bar from your target, then split what is left evenly between the two sides. A 140 kg squat on a 20 kg bar leaves 120 kg to load, 60 kg per side. Get this step wrong, usually by forgetting the bar entirely, and every plate that follows is wrong too.
Step 2: filling from the heaviest plate down
The calculator takes your largest available plate and fits as many as it can, then moves to the next size and repeats until the side is full or nothing smaller is left to add. For 60 kg per side with 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 2.5 kg plates available: two 25s take up 50 kg, one 10 takes it to 60 kg, done in three plates instead of six or seven smaller ones.
A second example shows why this matters more as the plate selection shrinks. Say the same 60 kg per side has to come from only 20 and 10 kg plates because the 25s are in use. The calculator loads three 20s, still exact, and lists three 20 kg plates a side instead of the two plates the full selection would have used.
Why the calculator fills heaviest first, and what changes with different plates
Filling from the heaviest plate down, using the fewest plates that hit the number exactly, is how every experienced lifter loads a bar without thinking about it, and it is what the calculator does too. When your ticked plates cannot reach the exact per-side number that way, the calculator instead finds whichever combination of those same plates hits the target exactly in the fewest plates, even if that means the stack it shows does not start with your single biggest plate. Fewer plates means less time between sets, less weight to carry to the rack and fewer plates to keep track of on a busy floor.
The alternative, building up light to heavy in several small jumps, is a warm-up strategy rather than a loading strategy: it belongs to your warm-up sets, not to the final plates on the bar for your work set.
When the target is not exactly reachable
If your available plates cannot make the exact per-side weight, most gyms only stock kilogram plates down to 1.25 kg or pound plates down to 2.5 lb, so some targets simply are not reachable to the gram. The calculator fills as close as it can and tells you the actual total you end up with, rather than silently rounding.
Even loading matters for reasons beyond looking tidy. A bar that carries more weight on one side than the other torques in your hands as you unrack it, which is a small thing at light loads and a genuine stability risk the moment the weight gets heavy enough that a millisecond of correction costs you the lift.
Standard bar weights at a glance
The bar itself is part of the total, and it is the most common place lifters make a mistake. Pick the bar you are actually using before you calculate the plates, since a wrong assumption here throws off every plate that follows, even when the rest of your maths is correct.
The calculator above only offers 20 kg, 15 kg and 45 lb, the three bars most lifters actually train on. A technique bar, trap bar or other specialty bar is not one of the options, so work out that total by hand: subtract the bar's own weight from your target, halve what is left, and load plates the same way the calculator does for the bars it does support.

Plate colours and why they help
Competition powerlifting plates are colour coded so a lifter, a coach and a judge can all confirm the weight on the bar from across the room, without reading the stamped number on the edge of a plate. The same colours have become common on commercial bumper plates too, because they make loading faster for everyone in a busy gym.
The standard colours, in kilograms
The IPF specifies a competition colour for three plates only: 25 kg is red, 20 kg is blue and 15 kg is yellow, leaving 10 kg and under to any colour. For the plates below that, the IWF's own competition-disc table fills the gap: 10 kg green, 5 kg white and 2.5 kg red, with no 1.25 kg disc at all in that standard. This calculator's diagram follows the 25/20/15/10/5 scheme above, then falls back to a widely used commercial-plate convention for the two smallest sizes it supports, black for 2.5 kg and silver or chrome for 1.25 kg. Treat those last two as what most gyms actually stock, not a competition rule, since neither federation specifies a colour that small (the IWF standard for 2.5 kg is red, and plenty of gyms still sell all-black training discs with a coloured rim instead).
Pound plates and bumper plates
There is no equivalent international colour standard for pound plates, gyms and manufacturers vary, so the calculator shows imperial plates by size rather than by a claimed colour. Bumper plates, the rubber-coated plates used for Olympic lifting, are typically all the same 450 mm diameter regardless of weight, so gyms that use them often colour code by weight even more deliberately, since size alone stops telling you anything.
Loading in a kilogram gym versus a pound gym
Most commercial gyms are consistently one unit or the other, but which one varies by country and gym chain, and travelling, or training at a new box while away from home, is the most common time the difference actually matters. A typical US commercial gym racks pound plates in 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb increments, while a European gym or an Olympic-lifting-focused box typically racks kilogram plates in 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg increments. Switching units in the calculator above swaps in the plate set that gym actually stocks, rather than showing you a mix nobody has in the building.
The practical difference is not just the arithmetic, it is precision. A kilogram gym can usually get you within 1.25 kg per side, 2.5 kg total, while a pound gym without fractional plates is limited to 2.5 lb per side, 5 lb total. That gap matters most to a lifter used to training in kilograms who walks into a pound-only gym expecting the same fine adjustment they get at home, and finds their usual small jump is no longer available.

Fractional plates and fine adjustments
Small increments, 0.5 kg or 1.25 lb plates, matter most when a lift is close to stalling. Adding 5 kg to a squat every week works early in a training block, but the same jump becomes unrealistic once progress slows, and that is exactly when fractional plates let you keep adding a genuinely small amount instead of skipping a week or repeating the same weight.
This calculator's picker stops at 1.25 kg and 2.5 lb, the smallest plates most gyms stock, so it will not select a 0.5 kg or 1.25 lb increment for you. If you own fractional plates, work out the total from the plates the calculator gives you and add your own fractional pair on top, on both sides, the same way you would add any plate the picker does not know about.
Few gyms stock micro plates by default, so if progressive overload in small steps matters to your programme it is often worth buying a set of fractional plates yourself. A cheap set of 0.5 kg or 0.25 kg pairs is a small purchase next to what it buys you: several extra months of a linear progression before you need to switch to a slower double or triple progression scheme.
How to use the plates it gives you
Load the heaviest plate first, pushed all the way to the sleeve, then work outward to the lightest. This keeps the load close to the bearings and stops the bar from feeling unbalanced as you add weight.
Always load both sides the same way before you add a collar. Loading one side fully and then the other, rather than alternating a plate at a time, is how uneven loads happen unnoticed. Use a collar for anything past a light warm-up, it is the difference between a stable bar and plates sliding mid-set.
On a heavy single, count the plates on each side out loud, or have a training partner confirm them, before you unrack. It takes seconds and it is the cheapest insurance against a loading mistake on the one set of the day you cannot afford to redo.
Loading for drop sets and back-off sets
Drop sets work in the opposite direction to a normal ramp: you start at a working weight and strip plates fast between sets with little or no rest, rather than adding them. Planning the strip order in advance, the same way this calculator plans a build order, keeps the transition fast enough that the drop set actually trains what it is meant to train, rather than how quickly you can find the right plate under time pressure.
A 100 kg back squat working set dropping in three quick steps to about 80 kg, 65 kg and 50 kg needs per-side weights of 40 kg, 30 kg, 22.5 kg and 15 kg on a 20 kg bar. Plan those four numbers before the set, along with which plates build each one from 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 2.5 kg on hand, 25 and 15 for the first, 25 and 5 for the second, 20 and 2.5 for the third, a single 15 for the last, and the strip between sets becomes swapping plates you already know are coming rather than solving the arithmetic live.
The fastest strip order removes the outermost plate first, since it was loaded last and sits closest to your hand, then works inward. This is the reverse of the loading order recommended above, heaviest closest to the sleeve and lightest on the outside, and it is the same reason: the plate you need to remove fastest between sets should be the easiest one to reach, not buried behind three others.
Back-off sets, a single lighter set after your top set rather than a rapid multi-step drop, are simpler to plan since there is only one new number to load rather than several in quick succession. A common structure is 90 percent of the top set for extra volume once the heaviest work of the day is done, which this calculator can give you directly by entering that reduced number as a new target weight.
Common mistakes when loading a barbell
Assuming a 45 lb bar is exactly 20 kg. It is 20.4 kg. At light weights the difference does not matter, but on a near-maximal lift it is enough to turn a planned single into a grinder.
Forgetting to subtract the bar. Typing your target weight straight into a per-side calculation without taking the bar off first overloads the bar by the bar's own weight.
Uneven sides. Fully loading one side before starting the other is the most common way a bar ends up lopsided without anyone noticing until the set starts.
Assuming every gym uses the same bar. A new gym, a squat rack with a fixed specialty bar or a competition platform can all use a bar that is not the 20 kg you trained on.
Running out of small plates. If a gym is missing 1.25 kg or 2.5 lb plates, the closest you can load is not your exact target, check the total the calculator gives you before you commit to the set.
Mixing kilogram and pound plates on the same bar. It is possible to hit a number this way, but the mental maths gets error prone fast, and most lifters are better off picking one unit system for the session and sticking to it.
How coaches use a plate loading calculator
For a coach programming percentage-based training, the plate maths is a small but constant tax on every session, especially for clients training at home or in a gym with a plate selection you have not seen. Handing over the exact plates removes a step that otherwise slows the set down or invites a loading mistake.
It also matters for accuracy across a training block. A client who rounds a percentage-based target to whatever feels close is not really following the programme, and small rounding errors compound over weeks of progressive overload into a plan that has quietly drifted from what was written.

- It depends on the collar. Gym spring clips and lock collars add roughly 0.2 to 1 kg for the pair, inside the rounding your smallest plate already forces, so most lifters ignore them. Competition collars are different: the IPF specifies 2.5 kg per collar and counts them, which is why a competition bar plus collars is 25 kg, not 20 kg. This calculator works from bar plus plates only, so add collar weight yourself if you are matching a competition total.
- What's the difference between a men's and women's Olympic bar?
- The women's bar is 15 kg instead of 20 kg, slightly shorter, and has a thinner shaft diameter (25 mm versus 28 or 29 mm) for a smaller hand. Loading maths is identical, you just start from a different bar weight.
- Can I use this for a trap bar or EZ curl bar?
- Not directly. The calculator only offers 20 kg, 15 kg and 45 lb bars, so a trap bar or EZ curl bar is not one of the options. Trap bars commonly weigh 20 to 25 kg and EZ curl bars 7 to 10 kg, and both vary by manufacturer, so subtract your actual bar weight from the target and work out the per-side plates by hand.
- How do I load a barbell safely?
- Load the heaviest plate first against the sleeve, then decreasing sizes outward, load both sides evenly before adding weight to either one, and use a collar for anything beyond a light warm-up set. On a near-maximal attempt, get a second pair of eyes to confirm the plates before you lift.

A stiffer bar with aggressive knurling tends to feel heavier than a whippy, smooth one at the same load, which is one reason a personal best on one bar does not always transfer cleanly to another.
