How the goal date is calculated
The calculator takes three numbers: your current weight, your goal weight and the weekly rate you choose. It subtracts goal weight from current weight to get how much you have to lose, divides that by your weekly rate to get the number of weeks, then adds that many weeks to today's date.
Weeks needed = (current weight − goal weight) ÷ weekly rate.
For example, going from 82 kg to 70 kg at 0.5 kg a week is (82 − 70) ÷ 0.5, which is 12 ÷ 0.5, or 24 weeks. Counting forward 24 weeks from today lands on the goal date shown above.
Why weeks, not days
Weight loss is planned and measured in weekly terms almost everywhere, from clinical trials to standard nutrition guidance, because day to day weight is too noisy to plan around. Converting to a calendar date at the end is just those weeks translated into something you can put in a diary.
Why the calculator uses a fixed weekly rate, and where that breaks down
The date assumes your rate of loss stays constant from today until you hit your goal. That is a simplification. Real weight loss slows down as you get lighter, because a smaller body burns fewer calories at the same activity level, so the same calorie deficit produces a slightly smaller weekly loss over time. Over a short window, a month or two, that slowdown is small enough to ignore. Over a target that stretches past six months, it can add several weeks onto the final date compared with what a straight-line projection first suggested.
Why we did not model a slowing rate
Building that curve accurately needs your calorie intake, activity level and a metabolic adaptation model, which is a different calculation the calorie deficit calculator handles. A fixed rate keeps this tool simple and is accurate enough for planning purposes over a few months; for a six month or longer target, treat the date as an estimate that drifts a little later as you go, and recalculate every few weeks with your current weight.
The 0.25 to 1 kg range
The rate options mirror the range most nutrition guidelines consider sustainable, from a conservative 0.25 kg a week for someone close to their goal to a more aggressive 1 kg a week for someone with a lot of weight to lose. Rates above 1 kg a week are not offered because they typically require a deficit large enough to cost muscle and are hard to sustain. Helms et al. express the sustainable range as a percentage of body weight instead, roughly 0.5 to 1 percent a week, which is why the fixed kilogram options here suit different people differently: 0.25 kg a week is close to that percentage for someone lighter, while the same 0.25 kg is a smaller share, and an easier ask, for someone heavier, who is better matched by the 0.5 or 0.75 kg options.
What could make it faster or slower
A rate that holds for four weeks does not always hold for sixteen. Travel, illness, a busy work stretch or simply losing motivation around week six are common, and each one pauses progress without meaning the plan has failed. On the other side, someone who is new to structured eating sometimes loses faster than their chosen rate in the first two to three weeks, largely water weight and glycogen, before settling into the true rate the calculator assumes. Neither pattern is a reason to panic about the date; it is a reason to keep recalculating.
Setting a goal date you can actually keep
A date tied to an event, a wedding, a holiday, a reunion, puts pressure on the rate rather than the other way round. If the maths says the sustainable rate gets you there two months late, the honest options are to accept a later date, choose a less aggressive definition of the goal, or knowingly take on a faster, harder to sustain rate for a short, defined stretch. What does not work is picking the date first and hoping the rate figures itself out.
Build in buffer weeks
Because the projection assumes a constant rate and real progress rarely is, adding two to four buffer weeks onto whatever date the calculator gives you is a reasonable habit, especially for a goal more than a few months out. If you arrive early, that is a good problem. If the buffer is not enough, it is a smaller gap to close than starting with no cushion at all.
Two dates, not one
A useful habit for a longer goal is to keep two dates in mind rather than one: the straight-line date this calculator gives you today, and a second, later date built in from the buffer above. Treat the first as the target you are working towards and the second as the one you tell other people, especially for anything tied to travel bookings or an event with a fixed cost of changing plans. Recalculating every few weeks then moves the working date closer to the buffered one or closer to the original, rather than forcing a single number to carry all the uncertainty on its own.

Choosing the right weekly rate
0.25 kg a week suits someone within a few kilograms of their goal, an athlete in season, or anyone who wants to protect strength and training performance above everything else.
0.5 kg a week is the rate most general guidelines recommend as a sustainable default: enough progress to stay motivated, small enough to protect muscle and keep energy levels normal.
0.75 to 1 kg a week needs a larger deficit and generally suits people with more weight to lose and, ideally, some supervision. It is harder to sustain for more than a few months at a time.
The same 15 kg goal at all four rates
Choosing a rate is easier with all four options laid out side by side. The table below runs an identical 15 kg goal through each rate on offer here, starting from a fixed date, so the actual gap between the fastest and slowest options is visible in weeks and in months rather than as an abstract number per week.
The spread is large. The fastest and slowest rates in the table are 45 weeks apart, about ten and a half months, for the exact same 15 kg. That gap is the real cost of speed: doubling the rate from 0.5 to 1 kg a week only pulls the date forward by 15 weeks, not 30, because the relationship is not symmetric. Going faster buys progressively less extra speed for a progressively larger daily deficit, which is worth weighing against how much earlier a date actually needs to be.
The weeks column also converts easily to months, which is closer to how most people actually plan around a date. Fifteen weeks is roughly three and a half months, thirty weeks is about seven, and sixty weeks is close to fourteen. Framed that way, the 0.75 kg a week option, twenty weeks or about four and a half months, often looks more attractive than it does as a raw number on its own, since it sits between two seasons rather than at either extreme.

Turning the rate into a daily calorie target
A weekly rate on its own is not something you can act on day to day; it needs converting into food. Each kilogram of body fat stores roughly 7,700 kcal, so a chosen weekly rate translates directly into an average daily deficit: multiply the rate by 7,700, then divide by seven.
At 0.5 kg a week that is 7,700 times 0.5, divided by 7, which comes out to about 550 kcal a day below maintenance. At the fastest rate offered here, 1 kg a week, it is roughly 1,100 kcal a day, a deficit large enough that most guidelines recommend it only for people with significant weight to lose and, ideally, some supervision.
Where the date and the calorie target meet

The deficit is a weekly average, not a daily rule
The 550 or 1,100 kcal a day figures above are averages over a full week, not a target to hit exactly every single day. A higher intake on a weekend and a larger deficit on the weekdays around it can average out to the same weekly total and the same projected date, which is one reason the date on this calculator is more robust to a single off day than it might look.
Working backwards from an event date
Some goals start from a fixed date rather than a chosen rate: a wedding, a competition, a trip. Divide the weight to lose by the number of weeks until that date to see what rate it actually requires, then compare that number against the 0.25 to 1 kg range above. If it comes out higher than 1 kg a week, the honest options are the same ones covered earlier in this article: accept a later date, redefine the goal, or take on a faster rate for a short, clearly bounded stretch rather than trying to hold it for the whole timeline.
Common mistakes
Picking a rate you cannot actually sustain. A 1 kg a week rate gives you the earliest date, but if the deficit it requires is not realistic for your life, the date is fiction. Pick the fastest rate you can actually hold for the full timeline.
Never recalculating. The date is only as accurate as the weight you entered it with. A target set at 90 kg drifts as you approach 80 kg; update it as you go.
Ignoring plateaus in the plan. Two or three flat weeks are normal and do not necessarily mean the date needs to move. Wait for a clear multi-week trend before deciding the rate was wrong.
Setting a goal weight with no real basis. A goal pulled from a chart or an old weight from years ago is not automatically the right target. The ideal weight calculator and a body fat reading are better starting points than a round number.
Treating the date as a hard deadline. A date that slips by two or three weeks on a six month plan is not a failure, it is the normal margin of error on a straight-line estimate. Reacting to that slip with a much larger calorie cut usually causes more problems than it solves.
What the date does not account for
This is a straight-line projection, not a metabolic model. It does not adjust for the fact that maintenance calories fall as you lose weight, for water weight swings, for a training block that adds muscle while you lose fat, or for weeks where life gets in the way of the plan.
It also cannot know your actual calorie intake. The date only holds if the weekly rate you selected keeps being true in practice; if you are not tracking food or activity, the rate is a hope, not a measurement.
