How weight loss percentage is calculated
The formula is simple: subtract your current weight from your starting weight, divide by your starting weight, then multiply by 100. (Start weight − current weight) ÷ start weight × 100.
Say you started at 90 kg and now weigh 81 kg. That is (90 − 81) ÷ 90 × 100, which is 9 ÷ 90 × 100, or 10 percent. The same 9 kg lost from a 68 kg starting point works out to 13.2 percent, a much larger share of that person's body, even though the absolute number lost is identical.
Why start weight is the denominator
The percentage always divides by where you began, not by where you are now. That keeps the number a stable record of total progress. It also means the percentage moves more slowly the lighter you get: a 1 kg loss is a bigger percentage near the end of a diet than it was in week one.
Why percentage, not kilograms lost
Two people can lose the same 9 kg and be in very different positions. For someone starting at 130 kg that is 7 percent, a solid few months of work. For someone starting at 65 kg it is nearly 14 percent, likely a longer, harder stretch. Percentage is what clinical trials use because it makes people of different starting sizes comparable.
The alternative: tracking absolute kilograms
Kilograms lost is easier to picture day to day, and it is what the scale shows you directly. Why the scale itself is a noisy instrument
A percentage calculated from two single readings is only as reliable as those two readings, and a bathroom scale is a noisier instrument than it looks. Water intake, the sodium and carbohydrate content of your last few meals, how much is currently in your digestive system and the timing of a workout can all move the number on the scale without any of them representing a real change in fat mass.
Where the noise mostly comes from
The biggest day to day swing usually comes from the digestive system itself and from water held alongside stored carbohydrate, neither of which has anything to do with fat gained or lost since yesterday. A heavy training session, a salty meal the night before, travel, or, for many people who menstruate, the days before a period, can each add weight on the scale that disappears again within days without any change in energy balance behind it.
Why this matters for the percentage specifically
Because the percentage formula treats whatever the scale says as ground truth, a bad reading on either end distorts the result for every future calculation, since the starting weight never gets re-entered. When the percentage stalls or goes backwards
A flat or rising percentage for two or three weigh-ins is normal and usually not a sign you have stopped losing fat. Water retention from sodium, a new training block, travel or the days around a menstrual cycle can add a kilogram or two overnight.
If it has been flat for three weeks or more
Recalculate your calorie deficit against your current weight rather than your starting weight. Maintenance calories drop as you get lighter, so a deficit that worked at 90 kg can quietly become maintenance at 80 kg.
A small rebound after a big loss is common
Regaining 1 to 2 percent after a rapid initial drop, often water and glycogen returning with the first higher carb day, does not undo the progress. Look at the trend over a month, not the single lowest number you have seen.
Common mistakes
Comparing your percentage to someone with a different starting weight. A 6 percent loss at 130 kg and a 6 percent loss at 65 kg represent very different amounts of daily-life change, even though the number matches.
Weighing at different times of day. Weight can swing 1 to 2 kg between morning and evening from food and fluid alone. Pick one time, ideally first thing after waking, and stick to it.
Recalculating from your lowest ever weight instead of your true start. If you regained some weight and are losing again, your percentage should still be measured from the original starting point, or the number stops meaning anything against the thresholds in the table above.
Treating a stalled percentage as failure. The scale is noisy. A single flat week tells you almost nothing; three or four flat weeks in a row is the point to actually change something.
Rounding the starting weight. Entering "about 90 kg" when the actual figure was 92.4 kg shifts every percentage checkpoint after it by a small but real amount. Use the most accurate starting figure you have, even if it is not a round number.
What the percentage does not tell you
This calculator, like every percentage-based tool, only reads the scale. It cannot tell you whether the weight came off as fat, muscle or water, and a large loss achieved by crash dieting can leave a worse body composition outcome than a smaller, slower loss that preserved muscle.
