This guide answers the question from both sides. Clients want to know what a session should cost. Trainers want to know what to charge. The market numbers come from cost guides we checked on 7 October 2026. The package and rate examples are worked examples, and we say so where they appear.
How much does a personal trainer cost per session?
In the US, a one to one session usually costs $40 to $100. The Thumbtack cost guide puts the national average at $55 an hour. Bark puts it at $65 a session, with a great value price of $45 and a premium price of $85. Both are marketplaces where trainers quote real clients, so they reflect what people pay rather than list prices.
The format changes the price more than anything else. Group training splits the trainer across several people, so it costs less per person. An online video session saves the trainer travel and floor rent. A trainer at an exclusive city gym charges for the brand and the address as much as for the hour.

How much does a personal trainer cost in the UK and Australia?
In the UK, Bark puts the nationwide average at £47 an hour, from £40 for great value to £54 for premium. London averages £60, with premium trainers at £75.
In Australia, Yellow Pages gives a range of A$50 to A$120 a session. Specialists in sports conditioning or rehab charge A$130 to A$200 or more in the big cities. Sydney is the most expensive city at A$70 to A$120 an hour, Adelaide the cheapest at A$50 to A$90.
What changes the price of a personal training session?
- Location. City trainers pay more for rent and charge more. London is £13 an hour above the UK average on Bark.
- Format. One to one costs the most. Semi-private training for 2 to 4 people costs about A$30 to A$60 per person in Australia, and group training $20 to $40 per person in the US.
- Specialism. Rehab, pre and postnatal, sport conditioning and competition prep sit at the top of the range.
- Experience and results. A trainer with a full diary and a waiting list can raise prices. A new trainer usually starts near the local average.
- Where it happens. In-home trainers often add a travel fee or charge more per session for the time on the road.
- How it is sold. A pack of sessions or a monthly membership lowers the price per session in exchange for commitment.
How much does online personal training cost per month?
Online coaching is usually sold as a monthly subscription, not per session. The client gets a programme in an app, a weekly check-in and messaging. FitBudd, a coaching software company, published 2026 ranges in its online pricing guide: Our guide to online personal trainer pricing shows how to build three tiers.
- Monthly price (USD)
- $100 to $175
- What it usually includes
- Programme in an app, check-ins, limited messaging
- Monthly price (USD)
- $150 to $350

- Monthly price (USD)

- Calls, habit coaching, competition or rehab focus
| Level | Monthly price (USD) | What it usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | $100 to $175 | Programme in an app, check-ins, limited messaging |
| Mid, full service | $150 to $350 | Custom programme, weekly check-in, nutrition support |
| Specialist or high touch | $350 to $800+ | Calls, habit coaching, competition or rehab focus |
Many trainers now mix the two: a few in-person sessions a month plus the app in between. We break that down with real numbers in hybrid personal training packages.
Are personal training packages cheaper than single sessions?
Yes. Packages trade a lower price per session for money upfront and a longer commitment. Bark notes that buying a package or paying for sessions upfront may get a client a discount. Here is how that works at a $75 single session rate. The discounts are an example, not a market standard. For twelve ways to bundle your time, see personal training packages.
- Pay as you go
- No commitment
- 10% off
- $67.50 per session
- 15% off
- $63.75 per session
- A weekly session, 4.3 a month
- $60.47 per session

The membership is the cheapest per session and the best deal for you as well. It turns a client who buys in blocks into steady monthly income, and nobody has to remember to rebuy a pack.
How much should you charge as a personal trainer?
Start from what you need to earn, not from what the gym down the road charges. Then check the result against your market. Four steps:
- 1.Set an income target. For example $60,000 a year before tax.
- 2.Add your yearly costs. Gym rent or floor fees, insurance, software, education and marketing. Say $800 a month, or $9,600 a year.
- 3.Count billable sessions. 20 paid sessions a week over 46 working weeks is 920 sessions a year. Leave room for holidays, sickness and admin.
- 4.Divide. ($60,000 + $9,600) / 920 = $75.65. Round down to $75 and compare it with your local average.
If your number lands well above the local average, you have three levers: a niche that justifies a premium, more clients per hour through semi-private training, or online and hybrid clients who do not need a session for every week of coaching. Small group personal training shows the numbers for the semi-private route. If you also sell meal plans, nutrition coach pricing covers what nutrition coaching costs.
One more figure is worth keeping in mind. According to O*NET, using BLS 2025 wage data, the median US exercise trainer or group fitness instructor earns $22.67 an hour, or $47,160 a year. Clients pay $55 to $65 for a session. Much of that gap is likely the gym's share and the unpaid hours around every session. That gap is why so many trainers go independent or add online clients.
Scraler lets you sell session packs and monthly memberships, bill clients automatically through Stripe, and deliver the programme and check-ins in the same app.
