Personal Trainer Certifications Compared: NASM vs ACE vs ISSA vs ACSM

A certified personal trainer certification from NASM, ACE, ISSA or ACSM costs from $410 for an exam alone to about $1,150 for the largest study package with the accredited exam in 2026. NASM and ACE list NCCA accreditation. Pick the one your gym or insurer accepts, then budget for CPR and renewal.

Every provider says it is the best, so this guide sticks to what is written on their own pages: price, exam, prerequisites, accreditation and renewal. We read them on 8 October 2026. Where a page did not give a number, we say so instead of guessing. Prices change with promotions, so check the page before you pay. This is general information, not career or legal advice.

Which personal trainer certification is best?

There is no single best one. The right certification is the one that is accredited, that the gym you want to work in accepts, and that fits how you study. A quick way to choose:

What is NCCA accreditation and does it matter?

The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is a third party that accredits certification programs. NASM states that NCCA accredited certifications are what most major gyms and health clubs require or prefer, and that employers check it when they verify a credential. ACE also lists NCCA accreditation on its personal trainer page.

Read the fine print on ISSA. Its certification page offers two exams: an open-book, untimed ISSA exam, and a proctored NCCA accredited exam run by its subsidiary, the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT). If you want the accredited credential, make sure you take the second one. We did not see NCCA mentioned on ACSM's personal trainer page, so check the NCCA directory before you rely on it.

How much does a personal trainer certification cost?

The headline price is a study package plus an exam, and it moves with offers. These are the prices we saw. Treat the discounted prices as a snapshot.

Do not compare the ACSM figure to the others like for like. It is the exam alone, while the rest include study material. For ACE, add $99 if you want the NCCA-accredited exam. Add the cost of a CPR and AED course on top of any of them.

How hard are the exams, and what are the pass rates?

Most trainers pass on the first try if they study. NASM publishes a number: in 2025, 19,338 of 22,843 candidates passed the NASM-CPT exam, a pass rate of 85%. ISSA says on its page that it has a 95% exam pass rate, but it does not say which exam that covers, and one of its two exams is open-book. We did not find a pass rate on the ACE or ACSM pages.

Exam format, pass mark and renewal for the four certifications. Checked 8 October 2026.
  • NASM-CPT: closed book, proctored, online or in person. 120 questions (100 scored, 20 unscored), 2 hours, pass at a scaled 70. You have 180 days from purchase to sit it.
  • ACE: the NCCA-accredited exam ($99 add-on) is proctored in person or online with a live remote proctor: 150 multiple choice questions, 3 hours, a score of 500 or greater to pass. The exam included with the study programs is an open-book certificate exam (100 questions, 70% to pass).
  • ISSA: an open-book, untimed ISSA exam, or the proctored NCCPT exam. The page does not give a question count.
  • ACSM-CPT: 120 scored questions plus 15 unscored, 2.5 hours. Scaled score from 200 to 800, passing at 550. Taken at a testing center or with online proctoring.

What do you need before you can sit the exam?

NASM and ACSM ask for a high school diploma or equivalent and a current CPR and AED certificate. NASM requires both: you can enroll first, but you need the CPR and AED card before the exam. ACSM asks for 18 or older, a high school diploma or equivalent, and adult CPR/AED, and says that from 2027 all its certifications will also require first aid training. ISSA lists uploading a CPR card as a step before you receive your certificate.

Insurance is the next hurdle after the card. Most insurers ask for a recognized certification and CPR, and we break down what cover costs in personal trainer insurance.

How do you keep your certification current?

You earn continuing education credits. NASM says you recertify every two years by earning 2.0 CEUs, about 20 hours, and that NASM One membership waives the recertification fee. ACSM asks for 45 CECs every three years and a $60 fee for the CPT, with an $80 late fee during a six-month grace period. We could not read ACE or ISSA renewal terms on the pages we reached, so check them before you buy.

How long does it take to get certified?

It depends on how much time you put in each week, and the providers mostly set a window rather than a course length. NASM gives you 180 days from purchase to take the exam. ACSM's online prep course is described as a 20 hour course with 19 modules, 453 lessons and more than 200 interactive knowledge checks. ISSA describes its course as 100% online and self-paced. A trainer who studies a few evenings a week can often be ready in two to three months; ISSA says as little as 3 months for its course. That is our estimate, not a provider claim, so plan your own schedule against the exam window.

How do you choose between NASM, ACE, ISSA and ACSM?

  1. 1.Ask where you want to work. Look at job posts at the gyms and studios near you and note which certifications they name. If you plan to work for yourself, ask your insurer which ones it accepts.
  2. 2.Check accreditation. Prefer a certification with an NCCA accredited exam, and be sure you book that exam, not a non-accredited alternative.
  3. 3.Compare total cost. Add the study package, the exam, CPR and AED, and renewal. A cheap exam with expensive study materials is not cheap.
  4. 4.Match the study style. Printed textbook and live Q&A, a fully online self-paced course, or an exam-only route if you already know the material.
  5. 5.Read the renewal terms. Credits, fees and dates decide what the certification costs in year three.

Whichever you choose, the exam is the start of the learning. Clients want a trainer who can screen them, write a safe program and adjust it. The certificate gets you in the door, and your coaching keeps the client.

What about NSCA and other certifications?

The NSCA offers its own personal trainer certification, and many strength coaches hold NSCA credentials. Its website blocked our requests when we checked, so we have not quoted any NSCA figure. Look at its page directly and compare it on the same five points: price, exam, prerequisites, accreditation and renewal. The same method works for any provider not listed here. For specialist routes, see strength and conditioning coach (CSCS), powerlifting coach and running coach, or health coach for a wellness credential.

What do you do after you get certified?

A certification lets you work with clients, but it does not find them. The next jobs are insurance, a business structure, pricing and a client screen, which we walk through in how to start a personal training business. If you plan to coach remotely, how to become an online personal trainer covers the extra steps. A health screen before the first session is standard, and our free PAR-Q template is a good start. When you start applying for jobs, our personal trainer resume guide shows where the certification goes.

Then work out what to charge. The personal training prices guide has market rates, and how much personal trainers make shows what income to expect. Our personal trainer rate calculator turns your income target into an hourly rate.
